Heating and lighting are where most new reptile keepers go wrong, and getting them right is the foundation of a healthy reptile. Unlike mammals, reptiles rely entirely on their environment to regulate temperature and process nutrients. This guide explains the essentials.
Why Reptiles Need Heat From Outside
Reptiles are ectothermic; they can't generate their own body heat. They move between warm and cool areas to regulate their temperature, which drives digestion, immune function, and activity. Without the right heat, a reptile can't digest food properly and slowly declines.
The Thermal Gradient: The Golden Rule
Never heat the whole enclosure to one temperature. Instead, create a gradient, a warm basking end and a cool end, so the animal can choose where to be.
- Place all heat sources at one end only
- Provide a basking spot at the species' recommended temperature
- Keep the opposite end noticeably cooler
- Verify both ends with thermometers, ideally a digital probe at each end
💡 Pro tip: Always control heat sources with a thermostat. An unregulated heat bulb or mat can overheat and burn or kill your reptile. A thermostat is not optional.

Types of Heating
- Basking bulbs: provide radiant heat and light from above, mimicking the sun; ideal for basking species like bearded dragons
- Ceramic heat emitters: give off heat without light, useful for night-time warmth
- Heat mats: provide belly heat, suited to some snakes and nocturnal species; always thermostat-controlled and mounted correctly
- Deep heat / radiant projectors: a modern option that warms the animal more naturally
UVB Lighting: Often Essential
Many reptiles need UVB light to produce vitamin D3, which lets them absorb calcium. Without it, they develop metabolic bone disease, a common, painful, and often fatal condition in captive reptiles.
- Diurnal baskers (bearded dragons, many lizards, tortoises) need strong UVB
- Choose the correct UVB strength for the species and enclosure size
- Mount it correctly: UVB doesn't pass through glass or plastic, and strength drops with distance
- Replace UVB bulbs every 6–12 months; they stop producing useful UVB long before they stop emitting visible light
A Simple Setup Checklist
- Heat source at one end, on a thermostat
- Thermometers at both the warm and cool ends
- Correct UVB bulb for the species, mounted at the right distance
- A day/night light cycle (typically 12 hours)
- Heat and UVB turned off or reduced at night as appropriate for the species
