A bioactive terrarium is one of the most exciting developments in modern reptile keeping. Instead of regular substrate changes and constant cleaning, you create a living ecosystem, with plants, microfauna (isopods and springtails), and your reptile all working together. Cleaning largely takes care of itself. Here's how to build one properly.
What Makes a Terrarium Bioactive?
A bioactive setup contains a living substrate with a cleanup crew of microfauna, primarily isopods (woodlice) and springtails, that break down reptile waste, shed skin, and dead plant material into nutrients the plants then use. The result is a self-sustaining mini ecosystem that requires far less maintenance than traditional setups.
Is Bioactive Right for Your Animal?
Bioactive works best for tropical species that require humidity, including crested geckos, chameleons, dart frogs, ball pythons, gargoyle geckos, and many others. Desert species (bearded dragons, leopard geckos) can go bioactive but require different plant and microfauna choices. It doesn't work well for animals that dig heavily and constantly disturb the substrate.
The Drainage Layer
The foundation of every bioactive setup is a drainage layer at the bottom of the enclosure, typically 5–8cm of LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) or hydroballs. This prevents the substrate from becoming waterlogged and anaerobic. Separate it from the main substrate with a weed control fabric or fine mesh.
The Substrate Mix
For tropical species, a good starting mix is:
- 60% organic topsoil (no perlite, no fertilisers added)
- 20% coconut coir (improves moisture retention)
- 20% orchid bark (improves aeration and drainage)
Add the mix to 10–15cm depth above the drainage layer. For desert species: 70% coarse sand + 30% topsoil, kept dryer.

The Cleanup Crew
Introduce microfauna before your reptile to give them time to establish:
- Springtails: microscopic, eat mould and decaying matter. Essential for controlling mould. Start with a culture of 200–500 individuals
- Isopods: eat faeces, shed skin, and dead plant material. Choose species based on humidity. Start with 50–100 individuals
Wait 4–6 weeks after introducing microfauna before adding your reptile, so they can establish and breed.
Plants
For tropical setups: pothos (virtually indestructible), bromeliads, ferns, peperomia, air plants, and mosses. For desert setups: aloe, haworthia, echeveria, and gasteria. Choose plants appropriate for your animal's conditions.
Lighting for Plants
Plants need light even in a reptile enclosure. Use a full-spectrum plant grow light on a timer, 10–12 hours per day for most tropical plants. Ensure it's compatible with your animal's UVB setup.
Maintaining a Bioactive Setup
- Spot clean any uneaten food immediately
- Mist to maintain humidity as required for your species
- Trim overgrown plants as needed
- Add new springtail cultures every few months if the population declines
- Top-dress the substrate with fresh mix annually as it compresses
💡 You will occasionally see isopods and springtails on the glass; this is completely normal and a sign your cleanup crew is healthy.
Common Problems
Mould growth: normal in the first 4–8 weeks; springtails will control it. Plants dying: usually insufficient light or wrong species for the humidity. Microfauna crash: usually pesticide contamination from plants or parasiticide treatments; always quarantine and wash new plants thoroughly.
